Reds in the Community
Reds in the Community provide inspiring, high quality inclusive programmes and initiatives. Harnessing the reach of Barnsley Football Club, we raise the aspirations of our community, supporting them through positive change.
Our activities promote health, fitness and wellbeing, improve learning and life chances and tackle local issues including holiday hunger, isolation and anti-social behaviour. We deliver under 4 themes:
SPORTS PARTICIPATION: Football/sports sessions to encourage regular physical activity, promote positive behaviours and improve health and wellbeing. For example, our Healthy Holidays sessions alleviate holiday hunger and isolation for deprived children whereas Kicks enables 8-19 year olds to take part in weekly sports activities.
SOCIAL INCLUSION: Inclusive football/sports sessions for targeted groups including older people, refugees, disabled people and girls, to improve physical and emotional wellbeing. For example, Safety Nets supports young people with mental health problems through sport and wellbeing workshops whereas Short Breaks enables disabled children to play regular sports and socialise.
HEALTH: Exercise sessions and workshops to improve health and wellbeing. For example, our Fit Reds 8 week courses enable local people to adopt and sustain healthier, more active lifestyles whereas Team Talks provides support to men experiencing mental health problems.
EDUCATION: Accredited courses and volunteering opportunities for 16–19 years olds to provide pathways into education, employment and training. For example, we engage 15-17 year olds in our NCS social action programme and deliver sports qualifications to 16-21 year olds.
